Luther George Park

Located east of Springdale’s business district, this neighborhood park has playground equipment and a pavilion. Public Works Department employees used large equipment Monday at the park to dig up mud and dirt in preparation for a new playground, which will be paid for by Kiwanis Club donations.

Designed by Spackman Mossop Michaels and Trahan Architects, Luther George Park will foster healthy community engagement through recreation, play, and outdoor performances. Set along Spring Creek the park will connect people to downtown, neighborhoods, and nature.

Park Features

Located along Spring Creek in downtown Springdale, Luther George Park is a vital community gathering place with connections to the Razorback Greenway, the city’s Main Street, and the historic neighborhoods that surround it. The design by Spackman Mossop Michaels and Trahan Architects aims to foster healthy community engagement through active recreation, play, public art, events, and nature-based learning opportunities.

One of the most popular parks in the city, this neighborhood park features shade trees for sultry Arkansas summers, a large playground, modern pavilions, and restrooms. The park also offers a small skatepark for teen and tween skaters.

A new trail through the park connects to the utilitarian Powell Street Trail in the south and to the more scenic Park Street Trail that runs north from the park to the intersection of Emma Avenue and Main Street. The trail is part of the larger 46-mile Razorback Regional Greenway. It is the first of its kind in Northwest Arkansas.

Park Activities

Whether you’re looking for a place to take the kids for a playdate or a relaxing stroll, there are plenty of activities to enjoy at Springdale’s parks. You can take a nature walk at Murphy Park, play basketball on the courts, or even go fishing in one of the ponds at Shaw Family Park.

The new Luther George Park, which was designed by Trahan Architects and Spackman Mossop Michaels, is currently under construction in downtown Springdale. The redesign includes a central plaza connecting the park to Springdale’s Razorback Greenway and Emma Avenue, as well as a performance pavilion capable of hosting events for up to 3,000 people.

Other features include an elevated walkway with an interactive water feature and a garden that contains roses, shrubs, and trees. The Jones Center also offers a variety of activities, including movie nights and touring Broadway shows. Guests can also visit the Runway Bike Park, which is a state-of-the-art bike park that is perfect for biking enthusiasts.

Park Amenities

Set along Spring Creek in downtown Springdale, this park fosters healthy community engagement through recreation, play, and outdoor performances. It includes a performance pavilion, restroom pavilion, and central plaza that connects the active corridor of the razorback greenway to main street life on emma avenue. Designed by Spackman Mossop Michaels and Trahan architects the dynamic form of the pavilion twists and straddles the walkway, forming an inviting gateway into the park.

The park’s amenities include a 3-acre pond open for fishing, sand volleyball courts, two rentable pavilions with 39 individual picnic tables, and a 0.8-mile paved trail. J.B. Hunt Park offers Lake Springdale, disc golf, and vast opportunities for walking and jogging with beautiful wide open spaces. The park also has four youth baseball fields and a Miracle League complex that allows barrier-free access to our national pastime for those with mental and physical disabilities.

The Downtown Springdale Alliance, which received the grant from the Walton Foundation, plans to unveil a redesign of the park this fall. It will feature enhanced and novel outdoor spaces, a great lawn to accommodate large outdoor events, and a performance pavilion that can host performances for up to 3,000 people.

Park History

The park has plenty of shade trees for the sultry, hot Arkansas summers, several pavilions, picnic tables, and barbecue grills sprinkled throughout the park, a large playground for the kids, and restrooms. But what sets this park apart from others in the city is the fact that it features a small skateboard park for the teenager set.

The Downtown Springdale Alliance, along with the City of Springdale and the community, broke ground today on a redesigned Luther George Park, the largest downtown open green space in Northwest Arkansas. The redesign of the park will include a new Central Plaza connecting the park to both Spring Creek and the Razorback Greenway, as well as a Performance Pavilion and enhanced age-appropriate play spaces.

Kiwanis Club officials considered Murphy Park, JB Hunt Park, and Grove Street Park as possible locations for the playground, Wilson said. The Kiwanis Club chose Grove Street Park because it is heavily used and has the potential to attract more people than other downtown parks.
